Seminar 13/2: How Change Happens

How can we understand the events, individuals and institutions that change the world? That is a question that Duncan Green tries to answer in his book written for ”activists who want to change the world”. Green draws on his longterm experience within development and his substantial theoretical insights. He argues that for social action to be successful, it is crucial to understand power relations and to apply systems thinking. In this respect, Green appears to align himself with the current ”Doing Development Differently” movement which encourages us to rethink how we do and think about development.

What do we know about the triggers for social change? How can external actors contribute to change? What is the role of civil society?

FUF welcomes Duncan Green, Senior Strategic Adviser at Oxfam GB and author of the book How Change Happens, to FUF-fåtöljen. Helena Bjuremalm (FUF) will comment on Green’s presentation and Karin Metell Cueva (Sida) will moderate the seminar. FILM: ’Resistance’ and ‘Democratization’ – Contradiction or Collaboration?

What are the contributions and the weaknesses of unarmed popular resistance movements in relation to democratization? How can party politics and non-violent resistance be combined in order to strengthen democratization, both in liberal democracies and autocracies?

Stellan Vinthagen argues that we need to rethink the relationship between resistance and democratization in order to understand what is going on with ordinary people in peaceful protest that brings down dictators.
